It seems every game is a “must win” this time of the year and every point is a point you have to fight for. Waterloo is in a fight for first in the Mid-Western conference with a month left in the season and faced the ELMIRA SUGAR KINGS at home last Sunday afternoon.

Waterloo never trailed in the game however the outcome might have been different had Siskins’ goalie MATT ONUSKA not have had a stellar outing (See Photo #1 of Jan 27, 2019 Album).

Waterloo had to shake up the lines with four players out of the lineup due to injury. JOSEPH SERPA was moved to a line with SAM CHERRY and OWEN LANE. SERPA opened the scoring at the 5 minute mark of the first frame on a nice play from CHERRY and LANE. Waterloo’s BENTON HAYES made the score 2-0 Waterloo at the 18 minute mark of the period with Siskins BLAKE PETTERLE serving a minor penalty for holding.

Waterloo scored again 3:26 into the second frame as ALEX LYCETT picked up some lose change in the crease area as the Elmira goalie temporarily lost sight of a rebound. Elmira scored a minute later to get within one goal and that’s how the second period ended-Waterloo 3 Elmira 1.

The third period was all Elmira as they outshot Waterloo 20-3 in the period and 50-23 in the game. JOSEPH SERPA scored 9 seconds in the 3rd period and again into an empty net to record his hat trick on the day (See Photo #2 of Jan 27, 2019 Album). Waterloo took a few penalties and counted on their young goaltender to keep them ahead. Late in the third frame Siskins Forward CURTIS RAWN was robbed of a goal by Elmira’s MATT WORONIUK who tried to give his club a chance (See Photo #3 of Jan 27, 2019 Album). Final score was Waterloo 5 and Elmira 1.

Elmira is back in town Sunday at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Centre for the season’s rubber match against the Siskins. Game time is 1:30. The two teams have each won three matches of the six so far this season.
