The Waterloo Siskins “held serve” Sunday at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex with a 5-2 victory over the Cambridge Redhawks giving Waterloo a 2-1 series lead in the best of seven Mid-Western conference quarter final. Waterloo won game #1 at home 7-2 only to drop game #2 by a 7-5 score in the much smaller Galt Arena Gardens in Cambridge.
Cambridge opened the score Sunday at 1:35 of the first period on the power play when Redhawk forward Devyn Orpana walked through the Siskins defense liked he was wearing a cloaking device beating Siskins Netminder MATT ONUSKA low on the glove side. SAM CHERRY evened the score with a floater from a ways out two minutes later that eluded the Cambridge tender. CURTIS RAWN put Waterloo on top with a power play marker at 8:27 of the first finishing a pretty passing play connecting OWEN LANE and SAM CHERRY. Cambridge scored their second power play marker with 4:08 left in the opening frame sending the teams to the first intermission tied at two.
The second period saw many good scoring chances at both ends. MATT ONUSKA was called on several times to bail out his team staring down Cambridge would be goal scorers (See Photo #1 of Mar 3, 2019 Album). SAM SPAEDT (the game’s first star) scored what ended up being the winning goal at 2:55 of the second period putting a puck through Cambridge goaltender Reagan Gies who was also strong in net for Cambridge. Siskins forward BRETT SCHAEFER (See Photo #2 of Mar 3, 2019 Album) buried a rebound off of a DOMINIQUE DIPONIO shot low to the goaltenders stick side being rewarded for going hard to the net. The score was 4-2 Waterloo after two periods.
Waterloo rounded out the scoring with another insurance marker on the power play when ALEX LYCETT (See Photo #3 of Mar 3, 2019 Album) went high to the gloves side on Gies. Final score was Waterloo 5 Cambridge 2.
